We are excited to also offer to the D/FW Metroplex and greater North Texas region limited veterinary cardiology consultations with Dr. Katie Meier and Dr. Nicole Culwell.
Dr. Meier is board-certified in Cardiology by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine. She currently practices in Austin, TX, but will be traveling to our hospital on a routine schedule to offer local consultations in canine and feline cardiology.
Dr. Culwell grew up in Ossining, NY. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1998 and her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Cornell University in 2003. She completed a 1-year Small Animal Medicine and Surgery Internship at Oklahoma State University in 2004. Her cardiology training was accomplished at The Ohio State University, under the mentorship of Dr. John Bonagura and Dr. Karsten Schober. In December 2007, she completed the 3-year Residency and simultaneously earned a Master of Science degree. The topic of her research was evaluation of left ventricular systolic function in mitral valvular endocardiosis using 2D strain imaging. Dr. Culwell also has an active interest in interventional cardiology. She currently lives in Stillwater, OK with her husband.
Examples of cases that a veterinary cardiologist is available to see:
- Congenital (present at birth) heart murmurs and heart enlargement
- Acquired heart disease and adult onset heart murmurs
- Breed certifications
- Arrhythmias (abnormal heart rhythm)
- Differentiating cardiac versus pulmonary disease as a cause of respiratory abnormalities
- Pacemaker recheck examinations and reprogramming
